In the past, when scanning handwritten or printed documents, turning them into data, and sending them to the other party, a special device such as a scanner or a smartphone whiteboard scanning application was required.

However, these tasks are now realized as genuine functions that can be used immediately on iOS 14 with only one device such as the iPhone 12 in your pocket.

When scanning paper documents with your iPhone and converting them into data, try the following steps.

How to scan documents with the Notes app on your iPhone
1. Launch the “Memo” app that comes standard with the iPhone

The Notes app icon is designed like a notepad, so it’s easy to find, but if you can’t find it, swipe the home screen to the right. You can find it by typing “memo” in the search form.

Swipe down on the home screen and search for “notes” to launch the app.

2. Open the note you are writing or tap the pen and pad icon in the bottom right corner

Tap the “pen and pad” icon in the bottom right to create a new note.

Create a new memo. Tap the icon in the lower right.

3. If you are using the software keyboard at the bottom of the screen or while entering characters ……

Tap the “+” button that appears above the keypad, and a camera icon will appear. Tap that icon.

The menu that appears when you tap the “+” button. Press the “camera” icon to select document scanning.

4. Tap “Scan Documents”

It will switch to the reading screen using the camera, and you will be able to shoot in the document scanning mode.

Tap “Scan Documents”.

5. You can also scan using the camera function

The icons at the top of the screen allow you to set the flash (on, off, auto) and color settings (color, grayscale, black and white, photo). When you point the lens at the document, it automatically recognizes the range of the paper and surrounds the part to be captured with a yellow line.

Note: If it doesn’t work, you can also change to “Manual” mode by tapping “Automatic” in the upper right corner

When you press the shutter button, only the document part is recognized and captured cleanly.

6. When you press the shutter button, the image data is trimmed to only the necessary part.

By the way, the position you want to trim can be fine-tuned by touching and moving the four corners of the captured data.

Press “Save Scan” to complete the import.

7. “Save” scanned data

When you “Save” the scanned data, the screen for importing with the camera appears again. You can continuously scan different documents. If you don’t need to scan any other documents, tap “Save” in the lower right corner to finish.

8. Scanned documents in “Memo”

Scanned documents can be managed as data in the “Memo” app.

Tap the scanned text to see it in a larger resolution.

Advanced: How to Edit and Share Scanned Documents on iPhone

You can also crop, change color settings, and rotate the image by tapping on the document pasted into the memo. Just do the import first, and then use it for fine-tuning later.

If you want to share the note with the scanned document pasted with other users, tap the Share button, which is an up arrow and a box in the upper right corner.

Then, options for sharing, such as email, messaging apps, and AirDrop, will be displayed, so select the service you want to use. You can also use “Save to ‘Files'” to convert to PDF and save.

There are many ways to share your documents with other users.

It is very easy to access by scanning the URL linked to the QR code with your iPhone. The standard camera app has a QR code reading function since iOS 11. Here are the steps:

1. Launch the standard camera app

Aim the lens so that the entire image of the QR code you want to read is displayed. Then the barcode is automatically detected and the four corners are surrounded by yellow lines.

Just point the camera at the QR code.

2. When the scan is successful, a notification will be displayed on the screen

Tapping this notification will take you to the website with the URL associated with the QR code. By the way, in addition to websites, the behavior after tapping changes depending on the associated data, such as accessing the App Store and downloading apps.
